On April 20, 1920, a group of businessmen and South Hills residents, under the leadership of Mr. C.L. Cooke, held a meeting at the Old Chatham Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. The objective was to establish a Country Club for the South Hills area on 78 acres of land situated at the intersection of Route 51 and Brownsville Road. Following a meeting on April 23, 1920, it was decided that the new Club would be named "South Hills Country Club," with membership limited to 230 individuals who joined before May 1, 1920 being recognized as Charter Members.

A subsequent meeting on May 6, 1920, at the Brentwood Municipal Building revealed that 207 applications had been received. Charter Members were required to pay a $100 initiation fee plus War Tax. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on June 12, 1920.

By November 8, 1920, the decision was made to increase active membership to 350 members and introduce an additional category of 50 life members.

The golf course was initially designed and started in early 1919 before South Hills Country Club was formally established and registered in 1920. The course opened as a 9-hole layout on May 10, 1920, transitioning to an 18-hole course on May 1, 1924.

In June 1938, a fire caused significant damage. Reconstruction efforts began promptly thereafter and culminated in the formal reopening of the Club in April 1939 following a temporary closure period.

The Clubhouse faced closures during gas rationing in World War II from December 1, 1942, to March 31, 1943.

A yearbook concept was introduced in 1944 and continues as the South Hills Country Club Roster.

In 1956, a splendid Swimming Pool was added to the club grounds.

A comprehensive renovation of the swimming pool facility was completed in May of ​2004.

The lower-level dining areas of the Clubhouse underwent renovations in ​2009​, transforming the Mixed Grille Room into the Tavern on the Tee​. The Tavern offers access to a beautifully landscaped patio for casual dining​.

In ​2012​, extensive renovation work was carried out on the Main Floor of South Hills Country Club​. The entrance was expanded for a more inviting modern feel​. The Ballroom received updates including state-of-the-art technology while preserving its elegant appeal​. The Lounge space underwent a transformation creating an intimate and sophisticated ambiance highlighted by a striking stone fireplace and magnificent windows​. The Dining Room saw enhancements with rich warm colors and stylish draperies adding an elegant touch to the space​.
